Salmon patties, also known as salmon cakes or salmon croquettes, are a tasty and versatile dish made with canned or cooked salmon. They are typically seasoned, mixed with binders like breadcrumbs or mashed potatoes, shaped into patties, and pan-fried until golden and crispy. Here’s a simple recipe to guide you in making delicious salmon patties:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cans (14.75 ounces each) of salmon, drained and flaked OR 2 cups cooked salmon, flaked
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (or 2 teaspoons dried parsley)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flaked salmon, chopped onion, chopped red bell pepper (if using), parsley, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
  2. Add the breadcrumbs, beaten eggs, and mayonnaise to the salmon mixture. Stir until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated. The mixture should hold together when pressed, but still be moist. If it feels too dry, you can add a little more mayonnaise or a splash of milk.
  3. Shape the mixture into patties, about 3 inches in diameter and 1/2 inch thick. You should be able to make approximately 8 patties, depending on the size.
  4. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the salmon patties in the skillet. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. You may need to cook them in batches, depending on the size of your skillet.
  5. Once cooked, transfer the patties to a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  6. Serve the salmon patties hot with your favorite sauce or condiments, such as tartar sauce, lemon wedges, or a creamy dill sauce. They can be enjoyed on their own as a main dish, or served on buns as a salmon burger.

Tips:

  • Canned salmon works well for convenience, but you can also use cooked leftover salmon or poached salmon for a fresher flavor.
  • If you prefer a milder onion flavor, you can soak the chopped onion in cold water for a few minutes before adding it to the mixture. This helps to reduce the sharpness.
  • For added texture and flavor, you can add additional ingredients like diced celery, grated carrots, or chopped fresh herbs like dill or chives.
  • If you want to make the salmon patties gluten-free, you can use gluten-free breadcrumbs or substitute with almond flour or crushed gluten-free crackers.
  • Leftover salmon patties can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them in a skillet over medium heat until warmed through, or briefly in the microwave.
